📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Corporate social responsibility programmes in Nigeria increasingly incorporate design-based community interventions including public space improvements, affordable product distribution, and skills training initiatives. This study examines the design intent, implementation quality, and community impact of CSR-linked design initiatives executed by ten major Nigerian corporations in communities across the South East, South West, and North Central zones between 2021 and 2024. A qualitative multi-case study methodology combines documentary analysis of CSR programme reports, semi-structured interviews with corporate CSR managers, design consultants, and community beneficiaries, and physical assessment of design outputs installed in recipient communities. Findings reveal significant variation in design quality and community alignment across sampled initiatives, with the highest-rated programmes characterised by genuine community co-design participation, post-installation maintenance planning, and use of locally sourced materials and labour. Lower-rated initiatives reflect a design philanthropy model in which standardised solutions are imposed on communities without contextual adaptation, resulting in underuse or rapid deterioration. The study introduces a Community Design Engagement Scorecard enabling corporations to self-assess the quality and community appropriateness of their design-based CSR programmes across dimensions of participation, contextual fit, sustainability, and measurable impact. Recommendations include the adoption of the Scorecard by the Nigerian Stock Exchange's ESG reporting framework as a design quality indicator for CSR disclosures. Keywords: corporate social responsibility, community design, design impact, Nigerian corporations, design philanthropy.
