Craft Design Innovation and Market Competitiveness of Nigerian Artisan Cooperatives

Artisan cooperatives in Nigeria play a significant role in organising craft production, sharing market access, and sustaining collective skills, yet their ability to drive design innovation that enhances market competitiveness varies considerably across regions and craft types. This study examines the relationship between craft design innovation and market competitiveness in selected artisan cooperatives in Benue, Kano, and Anambra States, representing the North Central, North West, and South East geopolitical zones. Primary data are gathered from 90 cooperative members and 15 cooperative leaders through structured questionnaires and focus group discussions. The study assesses design innovation practices including adaptation of traditional motifs, introduction of new products, use of ergonomic improvements, and adoption of new materials, and correlates these with indicators of market performance including revenue trends, customer diversity, and export reach. The theoretical framework draws on design management theory, the innovation in craft enterprises literature, and cooperative economics. The study examines whether cooperatives with stronger internal governance structures and design leadership demonstrate superior innovation capacity and market outcomes. The geographic diversity of the case sites allows for analysis of how regional market conditions, material ecology, and cultural contexts shape design innovation trajectories. Recent literature on Nigerian craft cooperatives has identified design stagnation as a primary market competitiveness challenge. Findings are expected to inform the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, craft promotion organisations, and the National Council for Arts and Culture.
