Critical Consciousness Development, Educational Identity, and Academic Achievement Among Youth in Post-Conflict Communities in North East Nigeria

This study examines the development of critical consciousness, educational identity formation, and academic achievement trajectories among secondary school youth in post-conflict communities in North East Nigeria, drawing on Freirean critical pedagogy and psychological empowerment theory. The protracted Boko Haram insurgency has destabilised educational systems and identity development processes for millions of young people in North East Nigeria, creating conditions that necessitate theoretically novel and empirically rigorous frameworks to understand educational resilience and engagement in adversity. The study employs a sequential mixed-methods longitudinal design across three academic years, involving 280 secondary school students from conflict-affected communities in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa States. Critical consciousness was assessed using the Critical Consciousness Scale, educational identity using the Academic Identity Measure, and academic achievement through standardised and school-based assessments. Structural equation modelling with longitudinal path analysis and hermeneutic phenomenological interviews with 30 purposively selected participants constitute the analytic approach. Results indicate that critical consciousness development positively predicts educational identity consolidation, which in turn predicts academic persistence and achievement gains over the three-year period. Youth who described their education as a form of resistance to conflict and social oppression demonstrated the strongest achievement trajectories. Community-based dialogue circles and teacher-facilitated critical reflection activities functioned as catalytic processes in consciousness development. This study contributes an original theoretical extension of critical consciousness theory to post-conflict educational psychology in Sub-Saharan Africa.
