Curriculum Design and Implementation for Emerging Technology Trades in Federal Polytechnics in North West Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the processes and challenges of curriculum design and implementation for emerging technology trades in federal polytechnics in North West Nigeria. Rapid technological change in sectors including renewable energy, drone technology, and digital fabrication creates persistent pressure on vocational education institutions to develop new curricula that reflect industry evolution. The study covers polytechnics in Kano, Kaduna, and Sokoto States and adopts a descriptive survey design, engaging 70 curriculum developers, programme coordinators, and industry liaisons. A structured questionnaire assesses curriculum design processes, stakeholder involvement, implementation timelines, and outcomes monitoring. Document analysis supplements survey data. Findings are expected to reveal slow curriculum development cycles, limited industry consultation, and inadequate training of faculty in new trade content. The study also examines NBTE's role in facilitating or constraining curriculum responsiveness. Recommendations include a fast-track curriculum review protocol for emerging technology trades, permanent industry advisory committees at the departmental level, and faculty development programmes in new technology areas. This study contributes to curriculum development research in Nigerian polytechnic education and provides a framework for more agile and industry-responsive vocational curriculum processes. Keywords: curriculum design, emerging technologies, polytechnics, North West Nigeria, technical education
