Energy management systems aligned with ISO 50001 standards provide a structured framework for continuous improvement in energy performance within manufacturing facilities, yet adoption rates in Nigerian industry remain low due to unfamiliarity with the standard's requirements and a shortage of qualified implementation support. This study develops a practical guide for deploying energy management systems in Nigerian manufacturing plants, drawing on implementation experience across five pilot facilities in the food processing, textiles, and chemicals sectors in Lagos and Ogun States. The pilot implementation process involved establishing energy baselines, developing significant energy use profiles, setting energy performance indicators, and designing monitoring and measurement plans in accordance with ISO 50001 requirements. Challenges encountered during each implementation phase are documented, along with adaptations made to suit Nigerian manufacturing operating conditions, data availability constraints, and staff capacity levels. Results from the five pilot plants show average energy performance improvements of 12 percent over an eighteen-month implementation period, with the largest gains achieved in facilities that coupled the management system with targeted equipment upgrades. Cost of implementation ranged from 800,000 to 3.2 million naira depending on facility size and prior metering infrastructure. The study synthesises the implementation experience into a step-by-step practical guide structured as a professional development resource for energy managers in Nigerian manufacturing facilities. Recommendations include adoption of the guide as a reference document by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria's energy management working group.
