The inadequacy of public waste receptacles in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, contributes to widespread littering and environmental degradation in one of Nigeria's most economically significant cities. This project addresses the dual challenge of functional performance and urban aesthetic integration in the design of public waste bins for deployment across high-traffic public spaces in Port Harcourt. A site assessment of major public zones including Mile 1 Market, Rumuola Junction, and Isaac Boro Park revealed an acute shortage of waste bins, with existing installations characterised by poor capacity, lack of compartmentalisation for recyclables, and visual incompatibility with surrounding urban design. Drawing on environmental design principles and stakeholder consultations with Port Harcourt City Local Government environmental officers and community groups, this study develops three waste bin prototypes differentiated by deployment context: pedestrian corridors, open plazas, and market perimeters. Each prototype incorporates separate chambers for organic, plastic, and general waste, lockable bases to prevent scavenging-related spillage, and surface graphics communicating responsible disposal. Structural materials include galvanised steel frames with fibre-reinforced polymer panels selected for resistance to the humid Niger Delta climate. User observation and attitudinal surveys conducted after prototype deployment indicate a forty-seven percent reduction in ground littering within a fifty-metre radius of installed bins. The project recommends a citywide rollout in partnership with the Rivers State Waste Management Authority.
