Developing an Original Framework for Performance-Based Intercultural Dialogue in Post-Conflict Zones in Nigeria

Post-conflict zones in Nigeria require structured intercultural dialogue mechanisms that go beyond negotiation to enable emotional healing and genuine intergroup understanding, and performance-based approaches offer unique capacities for achieving this while existing frameworks are inadequately theorised for the Nigerian context. This study developed an original Performance-Based Intercultural Dialogue Framework for Post-Conflict Nigerian Zones, drawing on theory, empirical programme evaluation, and practitioner consultation. A multi-phase constructive methodology was employed over 24 months. Phase 1 systematically reviewed intercultural performance and dialogue frameworks (62 publications from 2018 to 2024), identifying five theoretical inadequacies in existing models for Nigerian post-conflict contexts. Phase 2 conducted evaluation studies of five active performance-based dialogue initiatives in Plateau, Benue, and Kaduna States through observation, participant interviews (n = 80), and programme document analysis. Phase 3 synthesised theoretical propositions through consultation with 25 performance practitioners and peacebuilding specialists. Phase 4 refined the framework through pilot testing and expert review. The original framework proposes eight intercultural dialogue functions achievable through performance: perspective embodiment, shared narrative construction, collective mourning, accountability witnessing, hope performance, humour as social tension release, cultural exchange as mutual recognition, and joint creation as equality practice. Each function is specified with facilitation requirements, ethical safeguards, and evaluation metrics. Expert review confirmed the framework's theoretical originality. Recommendations include adoption by Search for Common Ground Nigeria and international application to other multi-ethnic post-conflict zones.
