📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Audience fragmentation in Nigerian broadcasting is driven not only by platform proliferation but by deep ethnic identity politics that shape selective media exposure in ways that conventional audience fragmentation theory, developed for class-stratified Western audiences, does not theorise. This study developed an original theoretical model of ethnic audience fragmentation in Nigerian broadcasting. A multi-method theory-building design was employed across three phases. Phase one conducted an audience ethnography involving 72 months of collective consumption observations and interviews in 24 households across six ethnic communities (Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa-Fulani, Tiv, Ijaw, and Kanuri), documenting how ethnic identity shapes channel selection, programme interpretation, and cross-ethnic content evaluation. Phase two conducted a quantitative survey of 600 broadcast media consumers across the same communities, measuring audience ethnic identity strength, media consumption patterns, and attitudes toward ethnically-identified versus national broadcast content. Structural equation modelling tested theoretical path relationships. Phase three developed and validated the original Ethnic Audience Fragmentation Model through expert review. The model proposes three fragmentation drivers: primordial fragmentation (selection driven by language accessibility and cultural familiarity), strategic fragmentation (deliberate preference for ethnically identified media as identity assertion), and reactive fragmentation (withdrawal from content perceived as representing unfair ethnic representation). Original contributions include the concept of Ethnic Communication Safety, describing how ethnic media consumption provides psychological security unavailable from potentially hostile national media, and the Fragmentation-Polarisation pathway model theorising how ethnic fragmentation contributes to broader political communication polarisation in Nigeria.
