Developing Guidelines for the Ethical Representation of African Oral Literature in Academic Publications

The recording, publication, and comparative analysis of African oral literature raises significant ethical questions about ownership, consent, cultural protocol, and the intellectual rights of originating communities that academic Comparative Literature practice has not systematically addressed. This study developed practical guidelines for the ethical representation of African oral literary traditions in academic publications and comparative literature curricula. A professional ethics framework development methodology was employed, drawing on structured interviews with 20 Nigerian oral literature scholars, community literary custodians, and publishing ethics specialists, alongside comparative analysis of ethical frameworks from ethnomusicology, anthropology, and indigenous studies. The interviews revealed that current academic practice is characterised by inconsistent consent practices, limited benefit-sharing with source communities, inadequate community acknowledgement in publications, and a tendency to decontextualise oral texts from their ritual and social functions. The guidelines developed address five ethical domains: community consent and partnership protocols, attribution and acknowledgement standards, contextualisation and annotation requirements, digital reproduction permissions, and benefit-sharing mechanisms including community access to published materials. Implementation examples from existing best practice in East African and Australian Aboriginal oral literature scholarship are included as models. Expert review by twelve scholars confirmed the guidelines' practical applicability for the Nigerian academic context. The study recommends adoption by the Association of Nigerian Authors, the Folklore Studies Association of Nigeria, and the editorial boards of major Nigerian literary journals.
