Developing Language Support Programmes for ESL Students in Nigerian Polytechnics: A Professional Framework

English language support for students entering Nigerian polytechnics has received considerably less structured attention than comparable programmes at universities, despite the significant language proficiency challenges facing many polytechnic entrants, particularly those from rural northern states. This study develops a professional framework for designing and implementing language support programmes specifically tailored to the Nigerian polytechnic context. The framework was constructed through needs analysis surveys administered to three hundred and sixty students and forty-five English lecturers across four polytechnics in Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger, and Kogi states, supplemented by documentary analysis of existing English Studies courses and focus group discussions with heads of English departments. Needs analysis findings indicate that academic reading, technical writing, and oral presentation are the language skills most urgently requiring targeted support, with significant variation across polytechnic department types. The proposed framework specifies five components: a diagnostic placement tool, a modular supplementary language skills programme mapped to vocational domains, a peer tutoring scheme, an online self-access resource hub, and a staff development workshop series. Each component is described with implementation specifications including scheduling, resource requirements, and evaluation mechanisms. The framework was reviewed by a panel of ten polytechnic English lecturers and NABTEB curriculum officers before finalization, resulting in revisions that strengthened its alignment with current polytechnic certification requirements. The study recommends pilot implementation at two polytechnics with contrasting demographic profiles before national rollout.
