Recovery-oriented mental health care requires psychometrically robust instruments that capture recovery domains as culturally understood by individuals with mental illness in Nigerian contexts. Existing recovery measures from Western settings lack cultural validity for Nigerian use. This study develops and validates the Nigerian Psychiatric Recovery Instrument (NIPRI) across multiple psychiatric sites. Instrument development will follow a three-phase process: conceptual domain generation through 40 focus groups with service users, caregivers, and professionals across six geopolitical zones; item generation and expert review through a modified Delphi technique; and psychometric validation in a sample of 600 psychiatric outpatients across six tertiary hospitals. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses will determine dimensionality. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and convergent and divergent validity will be assessed using the Recovers Assessment Scale (RAS) and WHOQOL-BREF. Differential item functioning analyses will examine cross-ethnic and cross-gender invariance. The NIPRI will capture culturally salient recovery domains including spiritual reintegration, family reconciliation, and social role restoration, which existing Western instruments omit. This instrument will represent an original psychometric contribution of direct clinical and research utility in Nigerian psychiatry.
