Development of a Chemical Inventory Management System for a Textile Dyeing Industry in Katsina State, North West Nigeria

Effective chemical inventory management in textile dyeing operations is essential for maintaining product quality consistency, ensuring worker chemical safety, controlling production costs, and achieving compliance with chemical registration and hazardous material storage regulations in Nigeria. This study develops a chemical inventory management system for a textile dyeing and finishing plant in Katsina State, North West Nigeria. A baseline assessment documents the range of chemical inputs, including reactive, vat, and direct dyes, caustic soda, hydrogen peroxide, sodium carbonate, and auxiliary chemicals, using material safety data sheet review and physical stock count verification. Current inventory management gaps, including absence of maximum stock levels, inadequate segregation of incompatible chemicals, missing chemical registers, and insufficient hazardous substance labelling, are catalogued using a structured checklist. A digital inventory tracking system is designed using spreadsheet-based tools configured to the operational scale and technical capacity of the company. Standard operating procedures for chemical receipt, storage, issue, and disposal are drafted and validated with production supervisors. Safety data sheet accessibility protocols and emergency response information display arrangements are incorporated into the system design. Training materials for storeroom personnel are developed and piloted with a group of fifteen staff members. Post-implementation compliance verification is conducted through a re-audit using the original assessment checklist. Findings demonstrate measurable improvements in chemical safety management across all audited categories and provide a replicable model for similar dyeing operations in the North West zone.
