📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
University communications offices in Nigeria are increasingly expected to manage complex digital media environments while maintaining institutional credibility and engaging diverse stakeholder groups including students, alumni, faculty, industry, and government. This study developed a practical digital content strategy framework for communications offices at Nigerian universities, drawing on content audits and practice assessments from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ahmadu Bello University, and University of Nigeria Nsukka. A strategy development methodology was employed, combining structured interviews with 15 university communications directors and social media managers with web and social media analytics analysis from each institution's public digital platforms. Audience mapping for each institution identified five key digital publics: current students, prospective students, alumni, academic partners, and media organisations. Content gap analysis revealed that research achievement communication and industry engagement content were the least developed content categories across all three institutions. The strategy framework produced encompasses content mission statements, platform-specific content calendars, editorial workflows, multimedia production standards, analytics monitoring procedures, and community management guidelines. The framework was validated through a four-week pilot at one institution, yielding a 41 percent increase in audience engagement metrics. Expert review by eight communication professionals confirmed the framework's practical applicability for Nigerian higher education contexts. Recommendations include dedicated social media management staffing as a minimum requirement for all federal and state universities with student populations above 5,000.
