Development of a Low-Cost Automated Drip Irrigation Controller Using Arduino Microcontroller for Smallholder Farms in Nigeria

This study develops, tests, and validates a low-cost automated drip irrigation controller using the Arduino microcontroller platform for smallholder farm applications in Nigeria. Drip irrigation system performance depends critically on precise irrigation scheduling based on crop water demand and soil moisture status, but manual management by Nigerian smallholder farmers is often poorly timed, resulting in both under- and over-irrigation. Commercial automated controllers are unaffordable for most smallholders at typical price points of 150,000 to 400,000 naira. This study designs a soil moisture-based controller using Arduino Mega microcontroller, capacitance sensors, solenoid valves, solar-powered battery supply, and GSM remote monitoring capability at a total material cost of 18,500 naira per zone. The controller implements a dual-threshold control algorithm with data logging and SMS alert functionality. Field validation is conducted on six smallholder vegetable farms in Ogun and Kaduna States over two growing seasons, comparing automated controller performance against manual irrigation management. Performance metrics include irrigation volume accuracy, timing appropriateness, crop yield, and system reliability. Findings reveal that the automated controller reduces water application by 31 percent compared to manual management while achieving yields statistically equivalent to well-managed manual irrigation. System uptime exceeds 94 percent over the validation period. Farmer acceptance is high, with all participants expressing intention to continue use. The study contributes an original affordable automated irrigation controller design for Nigerian smallholder conditions and recommends open-source dissemination of design files through the agricultural engineering professional community.
