Digital Divide and Access to Online Educational Content Among UNN Rural and Urban Students: A Comparative Study

The widening digital divide between rural and urban student populations in Nigeria has emerged as a significant barrier to equitable access to online educational resources, with implications for academic performance, employability, and lifelong learning capacity. This study compared digital access and online educational content utilisation among rural and urban students at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). The study was grounded in the Digital Divide Theory, which identifies socioeconomic, geographic, and infrastructure-related disparities as primary determinants of differential access to and benefits from digital technologies. A comparative survey design was adopted, targeting a population of 12,000 students, from which 374 respondents (187 from each group) were selected through stratified random sampling. A structured questionnaire assessed device ownership, internet access frequency, data costs, online academic resource utilisation, and perceived learning benefits. Findings indicated that urban students demonstrated significantly higher rates of consistent internet access, e-library use, and online lecture platform engagement compared to their rural counterparts. Rural students disproportionately reported reliance on intermittent mobile data access, with 58 percent citing affordability as the primary barrier. The digital access gap correlated with measurable differences in academic research outputs and course performance indicators. The study concluded that the digital divide at UNN reproduces existing socioeconomic inequalities in educational outcomes and requires targeted institutional intervention. It was recommended that UNN establish free campus-wide Wi-Fi, expand its digital library infrastructure, and develop offline-accessible learning content for rural-based students.
