Digital Entrepreneurship Among Youth in Port Harcourt: Opportunities and Constraints

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the landscape of digital entrepreneurship among young people in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, South South Nigeria, exploring the business models, revenue streams, opportunities, and structural constraints shaping the city's emerging digital economy for youth. Port Harcourt's relatively high internet penetration, concentration of oil sector multinational companies, and growing creative economy make it a distinctive environment in which digital entrepreneurship is increasingly viable but unevenly supported. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining a survey of 150 digital entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35 with 15 in-depth interviews selected for purposive diversity across business type. Survey data capture business activity type, revenue scale, growth trajectory, and perceived constraints, while interviews explore entrepreneurial motivation, digital skill development pathways, and experiences of the business support environment. Findings reveal that social media marketing services, e-commerce reselling, digital content creation, and app-based logistics represent the dominant digital business models in the sample. Revenue scales are modest, with 60 percent of respondents earning less than 150,000 naira monthly, but 40 percent report year-on-year revenue growth. Limited access to reliable broadband internet, the high cost of data, limited digital payment infrastructure outside the banking sector, and the absence of formal digital skills training beyond self-teaching are identified as the primary structural constraints. Recommendations include a Port Harcourt Digital Enterprise Hub with subsidised co-working and broadband access for early-stage digital ventures. Keywords: digital entrepreneurship, youth, Port Harcourt, digital economy, e-commerce.
