Discourse Analysis of Political Campaign Speeches in the 2023 Governorship Election in Rivers State

This study analyses the discourse of political campaign speeches delivered during the 2023 governorship election in Rivers State, South South Nigeria. Political discourse in Nigeria's oil-producing states is characterised by complex negotiations of ethnic loyalty, resource control, and developmental promises, yet few studies have applied formal discourse analytical tools to speeches from this geopolitical zone. The research adopts Critical Discourse Analysis as its methodological and theoretical framework, drawing on Fairclough's three-dimensional model of discourse. A purposive sample of twelve campaign speeches delivered by leading governorship candidates was selected for analysis. The data were subjected to lexical analysis, rhetorical devices mapping, and ideological positioning analysis. Findings reveal a consistent pattern of populist framing, the strategic use of pidgin for social inclusion, and the deployment of fear-based rhetoric to mobilise voter support. The study further identifies how speakers draw on regional identity markers to construct in-group solidarity against perceived external political forces. These discursive strategies reflect broader patterns of ethnolinguistic mobilisation documented in Nigerian electoral politics. The study contributes to the literature on language and power in Nigerian democratic processes and recommends voter education programmes that enable citizens to critically decode political messaging.
