Documentation of Igbo Masquerade Art Forms and Their Socio-Cultural Functions in Enugu State

Igbo masquerade traditions constitute a complex art system in which sculptural forms, costume, music, and performance converge to fulfil social regulatory, ceremonial, and entertainment functions that are deeply embedded in community life. This study documented the visual characteristics and socio-cultural functions of selected Igbo masquerade art forms in Enugu North and Igbo-Eze North Local Government Areas, Enugu State, South East Nigeria. A descriptive ethnographic design was employed, combining participant observation at twelve masquerade performances, in-depth interviews with twenty-four masquerade artists, community elders, and cultural custodians, and photographic and video documentation of performances and associated material culture. Visual documentation captured costume structure, facial mask design, body ornamentation, and performance movement vocabulary. Thematic analysis identified the masquerade as simultaneously serving judicial, spiritual, entertainment, and social cohesion functions, with specific masquerade types assigned to distinct functional domains. The Ijele masquerade was identified as the most visually elaborate and socially significant, embodying ancestral authority and communal prestige. Evidence of contemporary transformation was observed, including commercialisation at cultural festivals and the introduction of foreign materials into traditional costume construction. The study concludes that Igbo masquerade art remains vital but is subject to erosion pressures from urban migration and evangelical religious influence. Recommendations include state government documentation initiatives, inclusion of masquerade aesthetics in school art curricula, and artist-community partnership models to sustain intergenerational knowledge transfer in Enugu State.
