Documentation of Traditional Nupe Beadwork and Its Contemporary Applications in Niger State

Nupe beadwork represents a sophisticated textile and decorative art tradition in North Central Nigeria with complex colour systems, pattern grammars, and social significance embedded in its production and use, yet systematic documentation of this tradition remains inadequate for arts education and cultural preservation purposes. This study documented traditional Nupe beadwork designs and examined their contemporary applications in Niger State, North Central Nigeria. A descriptive qualitative methodology was employed, combining fieldwork in Bida (the historic centre of Nupe craft production), structured interviews with eighteen master beadwork artisans and six arts educators, and systematic photographic and sketch documentation of 120 beadwork samples. Results identified a hierarchical pattern system in which specific colours and configurations signify royal patronage, age-grade membership, and ritual significance. Red, white, and indigo remain the dominant traditional colour combination, while contemporary adaptations incorporate imported seed beads in wider colour ranges. Commercial fashion demand has driven the development of new forms including beaded handbags, shoe accessories, and contemporary jewellery, expanding the artisan economy while diluting traditional design integrity. Young artisans showed stronger engagement with contemporary applications than with ceremonially significant traditional forms. The study concludes that Nupe beadwork is undergoing productive commercial transformation but risks losing the ceremonial knowledge embedded in its traditional system. Recommendations include a state-supported Bida craft documentation centre, apprenticeship certification, and design collaboration between artisans and fashion graduates from Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University.
