Dynamic Assessment, Zone of Proximal Development, and Culturally Responsive Gifted Education Identification in South East Nigeria

This study develops and validates a dynamic assessment framework for identifying gifted learners in South East Nigeria using Vygotskian zone of proximal development principles and culturally responsive testing methodologies. Gifted education in Nigeria suffers from persistent identification bias, with traditional static IQ-based identification instruments systematically underrepresenting children from rural, low-income, and culturally distinct communities. The study employs a three-phase sequential design: theoretical framework development through systematic review and expert consultation, instrument construction involving 40 educational psychologists and 15 indigenous knowledge holders from Igbo communities across Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia, and Ebonyi States, and field validation with 500 primary school children across these states. The Dynamic Assessment Battery (Nigerian South East Edition) incorporates Igbo linguistic analogies, culturally embedded problem-solving scenarios, and graduated assistance scaffolding protocols. Item response theory analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and predictive validity testing against long-term teacher nominations and academic achievement constitute the validation analyses. Results demonstrate that the dynamic assessment battery identifies a significantly broader and more socioeconomically diverse gifted population compared to a standardised static IQ measure, with strong construct validity and test-retest reliability. Predictive validity at two-year follow-up is comparable to the static instrument, with superior ecological validity. This study makes original contributions to gifted education identification methodology and Vygotskian assessment theory within the Nigerian context. South East state Ministries of Education are advised to pilot the battery in primary school gifted education selection processes.
