This study applies Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory to develop and empirically test a multi-level longitudinal model of educational outcome determination in Nigerian secondary schools, making an original theoretical and methodological contribution to the foundations of education literature in the African context. Ecological systems theory conceptualises child development as shaped by nested systems: microsystem (family, school, peers), mesosystem (family-school interaction), exosystem (community, media, government), and macrosystem (culture, policy, economy). While widely applied in Western developmental research, its systematic empirical application to educational outcomes in African settings is limited. This study uses a three-wave longitudinal dataset collected from 1,200 Secondary One students tracked through Secondary Three in 40 schools across Kaduna (North West), Delta (South South), and Anambra (South East) States. Ecological variables at each system level are measured using multi-informant instruments including student, parent, teacher, and community surveys. Educational outcomes include examination performance, dropout status, and psychosocial wellbeing. Three-level hierarchical linear modelling with growth curve analysis is applied. Results confirm the ecological model's explanatory power across Nigerian contexts, with mesosystem interaction quality (family-school communication) emerging as the most powerful cross-level predictor of positive outcomes. Macrosystem insecurity significantly moderates microsystem effects in the North West sample. The study generates an original Nigerian Ecological Education Model with contextually validated measurement instruments. It recommends that educational policy adopt a whole-ecosystem rather than single-factor approach to school improvement, targeting multiple system levels simultaneously.
