Educational Psychology of Religious Influence on Academic Motivation and Scientific Reasoning Among University Students in Northern Nigeria

This study examines the complex relationships among religious orientation, academic motivation, and scientific reasoning dispositions among university students in Northern Nigeria, filling a significant gap in the educational psychology literature on religion as a contextual variable in cognitive and motivational development. Northern Nigeria's strongly religious social ecology raises distinctive research questions about how religious belief systems interact with formal education's demand for empirical and critical thinking, and how this interaction shapes academic engagement and the appropriation of scientific knowledge. The study employs a sequential mixed-methods design involving a quantitative survey phase with 420 university students from six institutions across Kano, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Abuja, Kaduna, and Zaria, followed by qualitative episodic interviews with 45 purposively selected participants. The Religious Orientation Scale, the Academic Motivation Scale, the Scientific Reasoning Assessment, and an epistemic flexibility measure were used quantitatively. Data were analysed using latent class analysis, structural equation modelling, and interpretive phenomenological analysis for qualitative data. Results identify three distinct profiles combining religious orientation, motivation type, and scientific reasoning. An integrated profile characterised by strong intrinsic motivation, high mastery goals, and high scientific reasoning scores is found among students with high intrinsic religious orientation who have developed epistemic frameworks accommodating both religious and scientific knowledge systems. These findings advance the psychology of religion-education intersection and provide practically relevant evidence for university curriculum and student development approaches in Northern Nigeria.
