Effect of Extension Services on Crop Productivity Among Farmers in Ebonyi State

Agricultural extension services constitute a primary channel through which improved technologies, crop management practices, and market information are transferred from research institutions to farming communities. In Ebonyi State, in Nigeria's South East geopolitical zone, the efficiency and coverage of state extension delivery systems directly affect the productivity of its predominantly smallholder farming population. This study examines the effect of extension service contact on crop productivity among farmers in Ebonyi State. Data were collected from 150 farmers using structured questionnaires across three agricultural zones within the state. Extension contact was measured by frequency of agent visits per season and participation in organised training events. Crop productivity was measured as yield per hectare for the primary crop cultivated by each respondent. Ordinary least squares regression with control variables for farm size, input use, and household characteristics was applied. Results show that each additional extension contact per season increased yield by an average of 7.5 percent, controlling for other factors. Farmers receiving at least four extension contacts per season recorded yields 34 percent higher than those with no contact. However, only 28 percent of sampled farmers reported any extension visit in the preceding season. The study concludes that extension coverage gaps in Ebonyi State significantly constrain achievable productivity levels. Recommendations include increasing the number of extension agents per farming community and adopting digital advisory platforms to extend the reach of technical crop management guidance.
