Effect of Play-Based Learning on Cognitive Development of Preschool Children in Lagos State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the effect of play-based learning on the cognitive development of preschool children in Lagos State, South West Nigeria. Early childhood education research increasingly affirms that structured play facilitates language acquisition, problem-solving, and social cognition, yet many Nigerian preschools continue to prioritise rote learning and academic drilling at the expense of play-oriented activities. The study adopts a quasi-experimental design, engaging 160 preschool children aged four to five years from public and private nursery schools in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area. Children were assigned to play-based and conventional instruction groups for a period of eight weeks. Cognitive development was measured using a standardised assessment adapted for the Nigerian context. Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development provides the theoretical foundation. Pre-test and post-test scores were analysed using analysis of covariance, controlling for prior cognitive ability. The study also collects teacher and caregiver perceptions through focus group discussions. Preliminary evidence suggests that children exposed to play-based environments demonstrate stronger gains in classification, seriation, and language skills. Recommendations will be directed at the Lagos State Ministry of Education, nursery school proprietors, and early childhood teacher education programmes. The study contributes to the evidence base for reforming Nigerian early childhood curricula and advocates for greater investment in play-facilitated learning environments across the South West geopolitical zone.
