📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study investigates the effects of different classroom seating arrangements on student participation in secondary schools in Bauchi State, North East Nigeria. While physical classroom design may appear peripheral to educational psychology, research increasingly demonstrates that spatial configurations influence communication patterns, peer interaction, and cognitive engagement during lessons. The study employs a quasi-experimental pre-test post-test design, involving 180 SS1 students across four secondary schools in Bauchi Local Government Area. Two seating conditions were compared: the traditional row-and-column format and a collaborative cluster arrangement. Student participation was measured using a validated classroom participation observation schedule. Data were analysed using paired samples t-tests and analysis of covariance. Results show that students assigned to the cluster seating arrangement exhibited significantly higher rates of verbal participation, peer-directed questions, and collaborative problem-solving compared to those in traditional row seating. Teacher-directed interactions decreased in the cluster condition, while student-initiated discourse increased. No significant difference in individual test scores was observed between conditions. These findings suggest that spatial arrangement influences the quality and distribution of classroom discourse rather than isolated academic performance. Bauchi State secondary school administrators are encouraged to consider flexible classroom designs that allow periodic shifts between seating configurations based on instructional objectives. Further research is recommended to examine the long-term effects of seating arrangement on different learning outcomes and subject areas.
