Effects of Inadequate Classroom Facilities on Learning in Rural Primary Schools in Niger State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study investigates the effects of inadequate classroom facilities on learning outcomes in rural public primary schools in Niger State, North Central Nigeria. Rural schools in Nigeria face persistent infrastructure deficits, including overcrowded classrooms, absence of furniture, leaking rooftops, and lack of toilet facilities, all of which compromise the physical conditions necessary for effective learning. Niger State, with a large proportion of its schools located in rural and semi-urban communities, presents a compelling context for this inquiry. The study employs a descriptive survey design and uses stratified random sampling to select 350 pupils, teachers, and headteachers from 45 rural primary schools across five local government areas. Observational checklists, questionnaires, and pupil performance records serve as data sources, and analysis employs descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The study draws on the Learning Environment Theory. Findings confirm that severe infrastructure deficits are negatively associated with pupil attendance, concentration, and performance on standardised tests. Overcrowding and lack of learning materials are identified as the most disruptive factors. The study recommends the prioritisation of rural school rehabilitation under the State Universal Basic Education Board capital expenditure programme and stronger community mobilisation for school maintenance. Keywords: classroom facilities, learning outcomes, rural education, infrastructure deficit, Niger State.
