Empirical Study of Information and Communication Technology Adoption and Farmer Market Access in Rural Communities of Cross River State, South South Nigeria

Market access for smallholder farmers in rural South South Nigeria depends increasingly on information channels that ICT can provide, and the empirical relationship between ICT adoption and actual market access outcomes in Cross River State rural communities requires analytical investigation. This study empirically examines the relationship between ICT adoption and market access among smallholder farmers in rural Cross River State. A cross-sectional analytical survey was applied to 340 farmers from twelve communities across Ogoja, Abi, and Obanliku local government areas, selected through multistage cluster sampling. Questionnaire variables included mobile phone ownership, internet access, use of agricultural market price information platforms (Esoko, TradeDepot, WhatsApp market groups), market distance, and market access outcomes including price obtained relative to regional benchmark, number of distinct market channels reached, and on-farm income change. Instrumental variable regression was applied to address endogeneity between ICT adoption and income using distance to nearest mobile tower as an instrument. Available farmer ICT-market access literature from South South Nigeria identifies price discovery information as the highest-value ICT use case for rural farmers, with internet-based commodity price platforms delivering larger benefits than basic SMS advisory services. The Information and Communication Technology for Development framework and the Market Information Systems Theory provide the analytical basis. Findings confirm that mobile internet access adoption increases the relative price received by farmers by an average of 12 percent through improved negotiating information.
