Entertainment Communication and Cultural Identity in Southern Nigeria

This study examines the relationship between entertainment media communication and cultural identity formation in Southern Nigeria, with particular attention to the role of Nollywood film, Afrobeats music, and digital storytelling in expressing, contesting, and evolving southern Nigerian cultural identities. Cultural identity is not static but dynamically constructed through media representations that circulate ideas about ethnic heritage, modernity, gender, class, and national belonging. This study uses a qualitative methodology combining critical discourse analysis of selected entertainment media products with focus group discussions involving 54 participants in Lagos (South West), Port Harcourt (South South), and Enugu (South East). Entertainment products selected for analysis include four Nollywood films, six Afrobeats music videos, and four popular podcast series produced between 2021 and 2023. Findings reveal that southern Nigerian entertainment media navigates a complex tension between international commercial appeal and local cultural authenticity, with different resolution strategies producing different identity outcomes. Yoruba cultural producers in Lagos entertainment show a greater integration of traditional cultural symbols within contemporary formats. South South entertainment increasingly centres the Niger Delta experience and environmental justice themes as cultural identity markers. South East Nollywood shows both traditional Igbo values and emergent cosmopolitan Igbo identity in dynamic tension. All regional entertainment forms show growing female creative voices with distinctive gender identity narratives. The study concludes that southern Nigerian entertainment media is a dynamic site of cultural identity negotiation. It recommends policy support for diverse regional voices in Nigerian entertainment production.
