Environmental Standards in International Supply Chains and Compliance Challenges for Nigerian Agro-Export Firms

This research investigates the environmental standards embedded in international supply chains and the compliance challenges they pose for Nigerian agro-export firms targeting European and North American markets. Increasing consumer and regulatory pressure in destination markets has led global supply chain integrators to impose environmental sustainability requirements including carbon footprint disclosure, deforestation-free sourcing certification, and sustainable packaging mandates on their suppliers, including primary commodity exporters in developing countries. Nigerian cocoa, sesame seed, and cashew exporters represent a particularly relevant population for this analysis. The study employs a mixed-methods design combining a survey of 65 agro-export firms in Oyo, Benue, and Ondo states with in-depth interviews of sustainability officers from international buyer firms and certification body representatives. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis are applied. The theoretical framework draws on the global value chain governance framework and the institutional theory of environmental compliance. The study examines the specific environmental standards encountered, the cost and technical capacity requirements of compliance, the role of certification bodies such as Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade in bridging compliance gaps, and the market access consequences of non-compliance. Findings are expected to show that Nigerian agro-exporters face a significant compliance capacity deficit relative to the environmental standard demands of premium European buyers, creating market access risks. Recommendations include government-supported sustainability certification assistance programmes, development of collective compliance infrastructure through producer cooperatives, and preferential market access recognition for certified Nigerian agro-exporters.
