📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Road traffic injuries are a leading cause of preventable mortality in Nigeria, with South West states such as Ogun ranking among the highest in crash frequency due to heavy commercial vehicle traffic on inter-city expressways. This study conducts an epidemiological analysis of road traffic crash injuries and fatalities in Ogun State over a five-year period from 2018 to 2022, examining crash types, victim demographics, causative factors, injury severity, time-location patterns, and pre-hospital care availability. A retrospective epidemiological study design is applied using secondary data from the Federal Road Safety Corps Ogun Sector Command, three State Emergency Management Agency reports, and hospital emergency register data from Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital and Sacred Heart Hospital Lantoro. Data are entered into an SPSS database and analysed with descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and negative binomial regression to model crash count predictors. The Federal Road Safety Corps 2022 annual report identifies the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and Sagamu-Benin Road as Ogun State's highest-fatality corridors, with speeding, alcohol impairment, and overloaded commercial vehicles as principal contributing factors. The Haddon Matrix is applied to systematically classify pre-crash, crash, and post-crash intervention opportunities. Findings will provide Ogun State's Road Traffic Management Authority with an evidence base for targeted enforcement and emergency response investment. Keywords: road traffic crashes, epidemiology, injuries, fatalities, Ogun State.
