Evaluation of Computer-Based Testing Implementation at JAMB Examination Centres in Bauchi State, North East Nigeria

Computer-based testing has been central to JAMB's examination modernisation strategy since 2013, yet significant variation in implementation quality across accredited centres in North East states such as Bauchi affects candidate experience and result reliability. This study evaluates the implementation quality of computer-based testing at JAMB-accredited centres in Bauchi State. A descriptive survey design was applied to 280 candidates who sat the UTME in 2023 and 2024 at four accredited centres in Bauchi, along with 30 centre administrators interviewed using structured instruments. Variables assessed included hardware adequacy, biometric verification accuracy, network stability during examination, examination session management, candidate preparation support, and reported technical disruptions. Descriptive statistics and frequency analysis were computed in SPSS. Available examinations management literature from North East Nigeria identifies network interruptions, biometric verification failures causing candidate delays, and inadequate candidate orientation as the most frequently documented CBT implementation problems. The Technology Readiness and IS Success frameworks provide the evaluative reference. Findings indicate that 34 percent of candidates experienced one or more technical disruptions during their examination session, with network failure accounting for 60 percent of reported disruptions. The study recommends minimum network bandwidth standards for accredited centres, mandatory pre-examination candidate ICT orientation, and real-time technical support deployment during examination sessions at all Bauchi State centres.
