Iodinated contrast media are widely used in CT and interventional radiological procedures, and the potential for acute hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, requires that radiology departments maintain reliable emergency response readiness. In Gombe State, North East Nigeria, where government hospital radiology departments increasingly use contrast agents, the preparedness for managing acute contrast reactions has not been previously evaluated. This study evaluates the contrast media reaction management readiness of radiology departments in government hospitals in Gombe State. A descriptive cross-sectional design is employed across five government hospitals with active CT or fluoroscopy contrast services. A structured assessment instrument documents availability of emergency drugs (adrenaline, antihistamines, corticosteroids), resuscitation equipment, staff training recency, written emergency protocols, and documentation of prior contrast reaction incidents. Interviews with 35 radiographers and radiology department heads supplement the observational audit. Descriptive statistics and frequency analysis are computed in SPSS. Literature from North East Nigerian radiology settings identifies absent or expired emergency medications, unavailable resuscitation equipment, and infrequent emergency response training as the predominant preparedness gaps in resource-limited departments. The ESUR Contrast Media Safety Guidelines and the RCR guidelines on contrast media reactions provide the normative reference. Findings are expected to reveal critical preparedness deficiencies across most assessed departments. Recommendations address a minimum contrast reaction emergency kit standard, mandatory annual contrast media safety training, and a state-level policy for contrast media administration monitoring in Gombe State hospitals.
