Evaluation of Food and Nutrition Extension Services for Rural Farmers in Kebbi State

This study evaluates the effectiveness of food and nutrition extension services delivered to rural farmers in Kebbi State, North West Nigeria. Agricultural extension services represent a critical interface between food production and nutritional outcomes, and their integration with nutrition education is essential to addressing dietary deficiencies in farming communities. The study adopts a descriptive survey design, targeting 220 rural farmers and 40 extension agents in Argungu and Shanga local government areas. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and focus group discussions. Objectives include assessing farmers' access to and utilisation of food and nutrition extension messages, evaluating the technical competency of extension agents in nutrition communication, and determining the impact of extension services on household dietary practices. Recent literature from North West Nigeria documents low farmer satisfaction with extension service content quality and frequency of contact, particularly on nutrition-specific topics. Data were analysed using mean scores, chi-square, and thematic content analysis for qualitative data. The Agricultural Knowledge and Information Systems Framework guides the study. Findings are expected to reveal inadequate nutrition integration in extension delivery and limited female farmer reach. Recommendations target the Kebbi State Agricultural Development Programme, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, and Home Economics departments to train extension agents in food and nutrition communication.
