The Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline project represents one of the most significant gas infrastructure investments in Nigeria's history, designed to supply gas to power plants and industrial consumers across the North Central and North West zones. This study evaluates the design and operational effectiveness of gas quality monitoring systems planned and installed along the AKK pipeline corridor, examining the technical specifications, placement strategy, and data management systems for gas chromatographs, water dewpoint analysers, and H2S detection units at key measurement points. The research employs a system evaluation methodology, reviewing engineering design documents, factory acceptance test reports, and commissioning data for the gas quality monitoring equipment, supplemented by interviews with pipeline commissioning engineers. The study benchmarks the monitoring system design against ISO 13686 gas quality specifications and NMDPRA pipeline operating requirements. Key evaluation findings address the adequacy of analyser sample conditioning systems for handling the wide range of ambient temperatures encountered along the pipeline route, from the humid Niger-Kogi corridor to the semi-arid Kaduna-Kano stretch. The study identifies gaps in redundant analyser provision at critical quality monitoring points and in the integration of quality alarms into the pipeline SCADA system's automatic emergency shutdown logic. Recommendations include installation of redundant gas chromatograph systems at the primary inlet and key delivery points, enhanced sample conditioning heater trace capacity for cold season operation, and development of a gas quality exceedance response protocol for AKK pipeline operators.
