Evaluation of Industrial Effluent Management by Small-Scale Food Processing Enterprises in Aba, Abia State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study evaluates effluent management practices among small-scale food processing enterprises in Aba, Abia State, South East Nigeria. Aba's food processing sector, which includes cassava processing, palm oil extraction, and smoked fish production, generates high-strength organic effluents that are commonly discharged without treatment into open drains and nearby streams. Sixty food processing enterprises were selected through purposive sampling across the Ariaria and Eziama production clusters. Structured interviews and site observations assessed wastewater volumes generated, treatment methods employed, discharge routes, and enterprise awareness of National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency effluent discharge standards. Effluent samples from ten enterprises were collected and analysed for biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, pH, and total suspended solids. Results show that none of the sixty enterprises operates any form of primary treatment before discharge. Effluent BOD values from cassava processing operations range from 4,000 to 22,000 milligrams per litre, far exceeding the NESREA discharge standard of 30 milligrams per litre. Discharge is exclusively to open drains that connect to streams serving downstream communities. Enterprise operators are almost universally unaware of applicable discharge regulations, with compliance attributed entirely to cost and space constraints even among the minority aware of requirements. Community complaints about effluent odour and stream quality are common but not acted upon by regulatory authorities. The study recommends low-cost communal effluent pre-treatment systems shared among processing clusters and targeted NESREA outreach to the informal food processing sector.
