Evaluation of Network Slicing Concepts for Future Telecommunications Services in Nigerian Context

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Network slicing is a foundational technology of fifth generation mobile architecture that enables the virtualized partition of a single physical network infrastructure into multiple logical networks, each configured to meet the specific requirements of distinct service categories. This study evaluates the conceptual applicability and potential impact of network slicing for future telecommunications services in the Nigerian context, focusing on healthcare, education, and financial services as priority verticals. A secondary research methodology was employed, synthesizing peer-reviewed literature published between 2020 and 2024, NCC policy documents, and operator technology roadmaps to assess the theoretical fit between network slicing capabilities and identified Nigerian service delivery gaps. The study finds that network slicing is particularly suited to addressing Nigeria's telemedicine bandwidth requirements, where quality of service guarantees for video consultation cannot currently be achieved on shared public broadband channels. In the education vertical, dedicated slices for university remote examination systems would address the integrity compromises caused by variable public network congestion. Mobile money transaction slices could provide guaranteed low-latency paths for financial services that currently suffer from USSD timeout failures. Key prerequisites for network slicing adoption in Nigeria are identified as: completion of 5G spectrum licensing, deployment of software-defined networking infrastructure, and development of multi-operator slice agreement frameworks. Recommendations address NCC regulatory preparation, operator technology investment planning, and academic research priorities. Keywords: network slicing, 5G, software-defined networking, Nigeria, service virtualization.
