Evaluation of Neutron Radiation Safety in Industrial Radiography Operations in the Oil and Gas Sector in Delta State

Industrial radiography using sealed radioactive sources is extensively applied in the oil and gas sector of Delta State, South South Nigeria, for non-destructive examination of welds, pipelines, and pressure vessels. While gamma radiography using iridium-192 and selenium-75 sources is dominant, some subsea inspection applications involve neutron activation techniques that introduce additional radiation safety considerations. This study evaluates neutron radiation safety management in four industrial radiography service providers operating in Delta State, assessing compliance with Nigeria's Nuclear Regulatory Authority requirements and IAEA Safety Guide RS-G-1.9. Assessment methodology includes review of source inventory records, radiographer qualification documentation, controlled area demarcation practices, safety device functionality tests, and emergency response plan adequacy. Personal neutron dosimetry practices were evaluated against ICRP recommended monitoring thresholds. Workplace neutron dose rate measurements were conducted at representative work positions using a calibrated rem-meter during simulated exposure scenarios. Results identify gaps in neutron-specific training among 65 percent of assessed radiographers, most of whom held qualifications addressing gamma radiation only. Personal neutron dosimetry devices were available at only one of four companies. Controlled area boundary demarcation was found adequate in all assessed companies. The study quantifies incremental occupational dose from neutron fields relative to gamma fields in specific inspection geometries and develops a neutron safety training module as a practical professional output.
