Evaluation of Recreational Facilities and Their Influence on Tourist Experience at Gurara Falls, Niger State

This study evaluates the quality of recreational facilities at Gurara Falls in Niger State, North Central Nigeria, and their influence on tourist experience. Gurara Falls, a prominent natural attraction along the Gurara River, offers considerable ecotourism potential through its scenic landscapes and biodiversity. The study adopts a descriptive survey design with structured questionnaires administered to 140 tourists during a three-month data collection period. Recreational facilities assessed include picnic areas, parking, viewing platforms, restroom facilities, food kiosk services, and swimming zones. Findings indicate that while the natural environment receives high satisfaction ratings from 79 percent of visitors, supporting facilities are poorly rated overall. Restroom facilities are described as inadequate or non-functional by 70 percent of respondents, and the absence of designated safe swimming zones is cited as a safety concern by 63 percent. Many visitors also report that food vendors at the site lack adequate hygiene standards. Poor facility conditions are found to negatively affect willingness to make repeat visits and to recommend the site to others. The study recommends that the Niger State government prioritise facility upgrading at Gurara Falls through a dedicated ecotourism development fund and that private hospitality operators be invited to manage food and recreational service concessions under regulated standards.
