Rural roads in Cross River State, South South Nigeria, are critical for agricultural produce transportation and community access, yet design standard compliance is frequently compromised during construction. This study evaluates the geometric design compliance of selected rural roads in Cross River State against Federal Ministry of Works rural road design standards. Twelve rural road sections totalling 86 kilometres in Abi, Etung, and Obubra Local Government Areas were assessed. Road width, shoulder width, horizontal curve radius, sight distance, road surface type, and roadside drainage were measured using Total Station survey equipment and GPS. Measured parameters were compared with the minimum standards specified in the Highway Design Manual for Nigeria. Results indicate that carriageway width is below the 6.0 m minimum standard on 72 percent of assessed segments. Horizontal curve radii are non-compliant at 38 percent of identified curves. Adequate stopping sight distance is not achieved at 29 percent of measured locations. Roadside drainage is absent or inadequate on 58 percent of assessed length. Overall, 65 percent of assessed road length fails at least two design standard requirements. The study concludes that geometric design standard violations on Cross River State rural roads create significant safety and maintenance risks. It recommends that the Cross River State Ministry of Works commission detailed geometric improvement surveys and enforce design standard compliance on all new rural road contracts.
