Small hydropower development offers a proven, reliable, and cost-effective pathway for electricity generation in Nigeria's inland river basins, yet most sites remain uncharacterised and undeveloped. This study evaluates small hydropower potential along three tributaries of the Shiroro River Basin in Niger State, North Central Nigeria, focusing on hydrological measurements, topographic surveys, and preliminary site ranking. Seasonal stream flow data collected over twelve months were used to compute flow duration curves and estimate dependable flows at six candidate sites. Digital elevation model analysis was employed to determine hydraulic head and approximate power potential. Field assessments included vegetation surveys, sedimentation estimation, and proximity to load centres to inform environmental and economic viability. The study applies a multi-criteria scoring matrix to rank sites by technical output, environmental sensitivity, and community benefit. Results indicate two sites with power potentials exceeding 200 kilowatts each, suitable for run-of-river micro-hydro installations capable of serving five adjacent farming communities. The study recommends detailed hydrological monitoring, environmental impact assessment, and community consultations as prerequisites for project development. Engagement with the Niger State Rural Electrification Agency is proposed as a mechanism for project financing and technical supervision.
