Evaluation of Takaful Insurance Operations and Growth Prospects in North West Nigeria

This study evaluates the operations and growth prospects of Takaful insurance in North West Nigeria, focusing on Kano and Sokoto States. Takaful, a Sharia-compliant cooperative insurance model based on mutual guarantee principles, offers a culturally acceptable risk protection mechanism for Nigeria's large Muslim population in the Northwest who may object to conventional insurance on religious grounds. NAICOM issued Takaful operational guidelines in 2013, enabling the establishment of dedicated Takaful operators and conventional insurers offering Takaful windows. This study uses a survey design, administering questionnaires to 180 individuals and 20 Takaful operators and conventional insurers offering Takaful products in Kano and Sokoto. Consumer awareness, product uptake, pricing competitiveness, and claims experience are assessed. Comparative loss ratio analysis between Takaful and conventional insurance products is conducted using secondary data from operator financial reports. Findings reveal that Takaful awareness in the target population is higher than overall insurance awareness, with 45 percent of respondents preferring Takaful products on religious grounds. However, product availability is limited, and Takaful operators demonstrate weaker financial stability metrics than conventional counterparts. Loss ratios in the family Takaful line are favorable but general Takaful remains loss-making for most operators. The study concludes that Takaful holds significant growth potential in Northwest Nigeria but requires stronger regulatory capitalization requirements and reinsurance access. It recommends NAICOM develop a dedicated Takaful development strategy with targeted minimum capitalization standards.
