Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Termite Control Measures in Timber-Framed Buildings in Akure, Ondo State

Termite infestation is a major threat to timber-framed buildings and wooden structural elements in Akure, Ondo State, South West Nigeria, and the effectiveness of the control measures currently used deserves systematic evaluation. This study evaluated the types, application methods, and effectiveness of termite control measures in 55 residential buildings with timber-framed roofs and wooden furniture in three Local Government Areas of Akure. Physical inspection documented infestation evidence (mud tubes, frass, hollow timber, and wing shed), and termite control measures in use were catalogued through owner and pest control operator interviews (n = 65). Effectiveness was assessed by re-infestation rates and structural integrity of treated elements, rated by visual inspection. Results showed that active termite infestation was present in 58% of inspected buildings. Chemical treatment using organochlorine compounds (some legally restricted) was the most commonly used control method (49% of cases). Pre-construction chemical soil treatment was absent in 73% of newly built buildings. Wood preservative treatment of timber elements before installation was practised in only 23% of buildings. Inspection revealed that chemical treatments applied post-infestation showed a 12-month re-infestation rate of 68%, indicating poor long-term effectiveness. The study concludes that termite control practice in Akure is reactive and technically inadequate, and recommends mandatory pre-construction soil treatment and timber preservation as conditions for building plan approval in Ondo State.
