Examining the Nexus Between Environmental Racism, Industrial Siting Decisions, and Health Disparities in Minority Communities in the Niger Delta

The concept of environmental racism, describing the disproportionate siting of polluting industries and environmental hazards in communities defined by racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic marginality, has generated substantial scholarship in the Global North, yet its theoretical and empirical application to the Nigerian Niger Delta context remains nascent and contested. This dissertation examines the nexus between industrial siting decisions, ethnic minority status, and environmental health disparities in Niger Delta communities, advancing an original theoretical extension of environmental justice theory appropriate to the Nigerian post-colonial context. A critical ethnographic mixed-methods design was employed, combining archival analysis of oil concession allocation and industrial location decisions from 1960 to 2024, geospatial overlay analysis of minority community locations and pollution source distribution, structured health surveys administered to 1,600 residents across twelve communities in Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa states, and sixty-four in-depth interviews with community members, government officials, oil company representatives, and civil society advocates. Structural equation modeling was used to test a causal pathway model linking ethnic minority status, industrial siting proximity, environmental exposure, and health disparities. Results demonstrated that ethnic minority communities were significantly more likely to host oil infrastructure and experience higher ambient pollution levels, independent of population density and proximity to oil reserves, consistent with a pattern of differential environmental burden allocation. Blood biomarker data confirmed significantly elevated petroleum-associated toxicant concentrations in proximate minority communities. The dissertation advances an original theory of Niger Delta Environmental Injustice that synthesizes post-colonial theory with environmental justice frameworks.
