Examining the Research Gap in Culturally Sensitive Mental Health Assessment Tools for Nigerian Populations

The majority of psychological assessment tools used in Nigerian clinical and research practice are imported instruments that may have limited cross-cultural validity for Nigerian populations, and the systematic identification of this assessment gap and its implications for counselling practice represents an important scholarly contribution. This study conducted a systematic gap analysis of culturally sensitive mental health assessment tools validated for Nigerian adult and adolescent populations. A systematic literature review was employed, searching ten databases for publications from 2010 to 2024 on the development or validation of mental health assessment instruments with Nigerian samples. One hundred and two eligible publications were identified and assessed for sampling rigour, psychometric quality, and cultural sensitivity. Results showed that while numerous Western instruments have been administered to Nigerian samples, only 28 publications reported full validation studies including confirmatory factor analysis, and only 14 incorporated cultural adaptation processes prior to validation. Instruments assessing depression, anxiety, and quality of life were disproportionately represented, while validated tools for substance use disorders, personality, trauma, somatisation, and family functioning in Nigerian contexts were largely absent. North West and North East geopolitical zones were severely underrepresented in available validation samples. The study identifies eight priority domains for original instrument development or rigorous validation and proposes methodological standards for culturally sensitive instrument adaptation in Nigerian counselling contexts. These findings have direct implications for the quality of Nigerian counselling research and clinical practice.
