Examining the Role of Industry Advisory Committees in Technical Programme Curriculum Development in Nigeria

This study examines the role and effectiveness of industry advisory committees in technical programme curriculum development in Nigerian polytechnics and technical colleges. Industry advisory committees are intended to ensure that technical programmes remain responsive to industry needs, providing regular input on competency requirements, emerging technologies, and employment trends. Despite their policy mandate, the degree to which these committees function meaningfully in Nigerian institutions is poorly documented. A descriptive survey combined with qualitative case studies is employed. Quantitative surveys of 80 curriculum developers and 40 committee members across institutions in Lagos, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, and Enugu provide breadth. Four institutional case studies provide depth. Data triangulation combines survey results, interview findings, and document analysis of committee minutes and curriculum revision records. Findings are expected to reveal that most advisory committees are inactive or ceremonial, with limited genuine influence on curriculum content, partly due to inadequate convening frequency, lack of institutional follow-through, and insufficient industry representation from relevant sectors. The study also identifies institutions where committees function effectively and analyses enabling conditions. Recommendations include mandatory annual committee meetings with documented outcomes, multi-sector industry representation requirements, and institutional incentives for curriculum responsiveness to advisory input. This study contributes original evidence to curriculum governance research in Nigerian technical education and provides a model for strengthening industry-institution curriculum collaboration.
