Examining the Theology and Practice of Deliverance Ministry in Nigerian Pentecostal Churches

Deliverance ministry, the practice of casting out demonic forces from individuals experiencing spiritual, physical, or psychological afflictions, is one of the most distinctive and controversial features of Nigerian Pentecostal church life. This study provides a systematic theological and empirical analysis of deliverance theology and practice in Nigerian Pentecostal churches. A mixed-methods analytical design was adopted, combining theological analysis of published Nigerian Pentecostal deliverance theology texts with ethnographic observation at twelve deliverance services across churches in Lagos, Enugu, and Abuja, and semi-structured interviews with twenty deliverance ministers and thirty recipients of deliverance ministry. The theological analysis examines New Testament exorcism accounts, the conceptual relationship between deliverance and psychological care, and the cultural encounter dimension of Nigerian deliverance theology with traditional African spirit beliefs. Observational data document practices including diagnostic interviews, laying on of hands, oil anointing, extended prayer engagement, and referral practices. Results reveal significant theological variation in conceptualising the relationship between demonic oppression and illness, ranging from comprehensive demonisation of all affliction to more nuanced integrated frameworks. Mental health referral practices are absent in 80 percent of observed sessions. The study makes an original empirical and theological contribution to the deliverance ministry literature in Nigeria, and recommends the development of an integrated theology and protocol for deliverance ministry that incorporates mental health sensitivity and professional referral pathways.
