Export Orientation and the Performance of Agro-Industrial SMEs in Nigeria: Evidence from Three Geopolitical Zones

This study empirically examines the relationship between export orientation and business performance among agro-industrial small and medium enterprises in three Nigerian geopolitical zones, testing whether the performance benefits of export market participation documented in international trade theory materialise for Nigerian agricultural processing enterprises. Agro-industrialisation is a Nigerian economic diversification priority, and the potential of export markets to provide higher value realisations for processed agricultural products is widely asserted in policy documents, but rigorous empirical evidence on the export-performance relationship for Nigerian agro-processing SMEs is limited. The study employs a comparative cross-sectional design, drawing a purposive sample of 180 agro-processing SMEs from export-oriented and domestically oriented groups in South East (cassava and palm oil processing), North West (groundnut and sesame processing), and South South (aquaculture and fish processing). Export orientation is measured as the proportion of revenue derived from export sales and self-reported export intent. Performance measures include revenue per worker, asset growth, and product quality certification adoption. Propensity score matching is applied to control for observable differences between exporting and non-exporting enterprises. Findings indicate that export-oriented agro-processing SMEs show significantly higher revenue per worker and product quality certification rates, consistent with the learning-by-exporting hypothesis. However, the export participation rate is very low in all three zones, and most exporters access export markets indirectly through export intermediaries rather than through direct relationships with foreign buyers.
