Feasibility of Solar Street Lighting in Urban Neighbourhoods of Ibadan, Oyo State

Street lighting in Nigerian urban centres is frequently inadequate, unreliable, and dependent on a failing grid infrastructure, with direct consequences for public safety and economic activity after dark. This study evaluates the feasibility of solar-powered street lighting systems in selected urban neighbourhoods of Ibadan, Oyo State, South West Nigeria, focusing on technical adequacy, cost competitiveness, and community acceptance. Primary data were gathered through structured surveys of 250 residents and 30 local government officials to assess current street lighting conditions, safety concerns, and community willingness to contribute to maintenance. Solar irradiance data and load calculations were used to size photovoltaic panels, battery banks, and LED luminaires for three representative street configurations. Cost comparisons were drawn between grid-connected alternatives and standalone solar street light installations over a ten-year project horizon. Results indicate that solar street lights can provide reliable illumination for an average of 11 hours nightly, with full cost recovery achievable within five to seven years when replacing diesel-powered alternatives. Community safety surveys show 88 percent of respondents would support installation and local maintenance arrangements. The study recommends a public-private partnership model engaging Oyo State government and local technology suppliers to accelerate deployment across high-density residential and market areas.
