Financial Inclusion, Poverty Reduction, and Household Welfare in Rural Nigeria: A Microeconomic Analysis

This study examines the microeconomic relationships among financial inclusion indicators, poverty reduction outcomes, and household welfare in rural Nigeria. Despite significant growth in Nigeria's mobile money and agent banking ecosystem, rural financial inclusion rates remain substantially below urban levels. The pathways through which financial access translates into welfare improvements, including increased consumption, health expenditure, children's education investment, and business development, are not yet well-established in the Nigerian empirical literature. This study uses primary household survey data collected from 450 rural households in Nasarawa, Niger, and Taraba States, representing the North Central geopolitical zone. Financial inclusion is measured using account ownership, savings product access, credit availability, and insurance coverage. Welfare outcomes include per capita consumption, nutritional status, school enrollment, and subjective wellbeing. Instrumental variable regression and propensity score matching are applied to address selection bias in financial access. Results indicate that formal financial account ownership has significant positive effects on per capita consumption and household business investment. Mobile money access shows particularly strong effects on consumption smoothing during income shocks. Credit access is associated with increased business investment but shows no significant direct effect on poverty headcount reduction in the short term. The study concludes that financial inclusion is a meaningful poverty reduction tool in rural Nigeria. It recommends targeted digital financial literacy programs to maximize the welfare impact of expanded financial access.
