Forensic Implications of Open Defecation and Environmental Contamination in Yobe State Communities

Open defecation and its environmental consequences generate forensic public health implications in settings where sanitation infrastructure is inadequate, contributing to disease outbreaks with potentially criminal dimensions including negligence liability and regulatory non-compliance. This study examines the forensic public health implications of open defecation and associated environmental contamination in rural communities in Yobe State, North East Nigeria. A descriptive epidemiological design was employed, collecting soil and surface water samples from fifteen community sites, reviewing health and sanitation reports from the Yobe State Ministry of Health and WASH programme records between 2020 and 2024, and conducting semi-structured interviews with twelve community health extension workers and environmental health officers. Samples were analysed for faecal indicator organisms and helminth egg presence using standard microbiological methods. The study assesses the forensic evidence potential of environmental contamination data in establishing public health negligence claims against local authorities. Findings reveal faecal coliform contamination exceeding regulatory standards at all fifteen sampling sites, with Ascaris lumbricoides eggs detected in twelve sites. Forensic traceability analysis linked contamination sources to inadequate school latrine infrastructure in eight communities. Public health negligence liability indicators were identified in six cases where documented regulatory standards had been persistently unmet without remedial action. Recommendations include the establishment of forensic environmental monitoring protocols for WASH programme compliance in North East Nigeria and the development of public health forensics capacity within state environmental health agencies.
